The Problem With Blaming Gun Violence on Video Games – Between the Scenes: The Daily Show

The Problem With Blaming Gun Violence on Video Games – Between the Scenes: The Daily Show

– I’m not one of those
people who goes like you can ban all guns in America. You can get rid of all guns. I think guns are, in many
ways, tied to American culture for many people. They see it as a
symbol of freedom. People still want
that as as protection, I understand that as an idea. I just think you can make
it a lot harder for people to own guns and a lot
harder for people to own multiple guns. Do you know what I mean? I understand protection,
but at some point you’re a one-man walking army. That’s what you are, you know? That doesn’t seem
well regulated to me, even if you’re gonna bring
in the Second Amendment. Then like people, they come
up with all those excuses. One lawmaker was like you
know, it’s these video games these kids play,
the video games. I call bullshit on that. Yo, I play Call of
Duty all the time. Even in video games
they’ll be like oh no, you’ve gotta unlock guns. You can’t just have them all. They’ll be like yeah,
you get one, you get one. (clapping) Then when you get to like
three they’re like yeah, you’ve got to throw
the other ones away. You can’t have that many. There’s like one
sidearm, one main gun. Yeah, you can’t just have
them all, I mean come on now. (upbeat instrumental music)

Throughout American history, whenever a situation like violence occurs, we look for the boogeyman who cannot be the cause (unlike the guns, media fascination and crazy folk). Rock music, violent movies, video games. I agree it can desensitize. But make you kill 20 people? No, the gun and your brain did that all by themselves.

    I call BULLSHIT!
If you have two guys, both with mental issues, and one of them becomes desensitized with killing people by playing FirstPersonShooter video games …which one do you think is going to be a "problem " to society? Video games may not be the ONLY reason these mass shooters snap, but I am confident that video games are definitely a factor in the equation.
    …so Bullshit.

Games are ART, not children's toys! Don't blame the artist or the art for being ignorant of the game rating system and not paying more attention to what your kids play! There's a big M on the box for crying out loud!

I'm all for banning the AR15 AND BUMP STOCKS..I've shot the AR semi auto it fires as fast as you can pull the trigger then my friend put on the bump stock and it turned a semi auto into a full automatic assault rifle and you can't hunt with it or anything else so it's useless to own one but I'm not for banning all the guns.

Many of the comments compare the US to other countries. We have a unique situation with the US. Our DNA is made up of aggressive individuals who took risks to get here, making up a crazy salad of nationalities. Hollywood has glorified the gun culture with wars and westerns. We are not a cohesive society. It's a wonder we get along as well as we do.

They’ve been blaming games since the 90s.

Their whole argument is tired; same old talking points they’ve been dragging out for years:

    -Violent video games
    -Rap culture
    -Heavy metal music
    -Movies
-Liberals are trying to take you guns
    -Democrats taking away your 2nd

C’mon, if you’re gonna spin, at least come up with some new shit.

Video games don't cause people to go out and shoot a bunch of people. Its the idiots that don't seem to know whats common sense to most people which is that they can't do whats portrayed in video games, in real life. The 2nd amendment is to a limited degree a relic of a bygone era. People that argue for it manipulate parts of it to suit their arguments. The 2nd amendment was put in place not solely to give people indisputable right to keep, and carry firearms. Its main purpose was in the event another revolution was necessary to remove a legitimately corrupt government from power. And before a bunch of gun nut bleeding hearts descend on me I would like to say that I am not at all against guns. I own a P99 semi-automatic handgun myself. Just stating the full facts that are normally left out.

Violent video games taken in the larger context of widespread cultural media violence (from endless Hollywood blockbusters to moronic YouTube daredevils), 310 million extant guns in private hands, frighteningly militarized police, unending wars, openly expressed threats of nuclear obliteration of other nations, unarmed African-American homicides by "law enforcement", our lust for brutal NFL" hits", escalating rates of rape, opiate addiction and suicide, "revenge" Facebook posts, etc.,etc. … violent gaming IS unquestionably part of the cumulative brutish "conditioning" we are undergoing.

I honestly don't even understand why Americans think that you need more than one gun. Unless you're secretly an octopus, you only got two hands, and there's no way all Americans can shoot with two guns in both hands like vampire Kate Beckinsale.

If it's about protection, one gun should suffice. If you want to hold something in each hand, hold the gun properly or just get a fucking axe.

They like to point the problem at something else where the answer is so simple and is right in front, please stay away from the video games is proofed that video games are not the caused for gun violent, instead establish better background check and raise the minimum age to buy an assault riffle to 21, and also the NRA has lobbied the government to block gun violent studies which is sad that this organization have every Republican in the palm of their hands.

Some time ago someone attempted to get in my gf's house. She called the cops, then her father, then me. Fortunately, the intruder abandoned his efforts. Her father arrived first after 8 mins. I arrived second after 16 min's. Then the cop(singular) after 44 mins. Guns don't make people "FEEL" safe. They give us the the ability to take responsibility for our own safety. Which we need and have a responsibility to take.
All that said, I am open to reasonable gun legislation if it protects people's rights and actually progressively works to save lives

I can certainly see the link between my ex’s stunted emotional intelligence and social IQ and his 12 hours a day addiction to M-Rated video games. Lots of tantrums, paranoid accusations, intimidation tactics all to get his way. He didn’t do anything door activities, his alternative hobbies were comic books. Didn’t want to grow up or even try new things, would do his damndest to manipulate others into performing his responsibilities for him. M-Rated video games hard wired him for violence and manipulation and he is hell bent on staying that way, just sticking with another girl who’s more afraid of winding single than with him.

Gun laws won't change the US' problems with guns. It's in the very culture you mention at the beginning. The idea that you need (or should ever use) a gun in a civilised (important qualifier; one could argue the US society is still not civilised concerning that aspect) society for defense is just not a sane one. I live in a country with very liberal (as in you are free to have them) gun laws. Yet they are mostly seen as tools for: Sport, hunting, law enforcement (hardly ever used) and the military. There is also an old culture of para-military shooting sport. Yet, hardly anyone entertains te idea: "I'm going to defend my house and family, gun in hand!"

I do not agree with the title of this video, video games have been progressing in the violence, and they are very realistic too, of course they do not affect everybody in the same way. But in young minds it has a bigger impact than we think. Kids learn by imitation and if we add some inner psychological instability with low gun control, we are making human guns (or massive shooters) and because you did not turned into a murderer because of that it doesn't mean that someone else cannot be affected. This is not common in other countries because one or two of these aspects are more regulated. We cannot compare Japan to USA, they are totally different. In Japan, obedience and showing respect to your family and other people is quite a thing. The main problem here is the denial of the causes of the problem.
