Generation Kill: The American Soldiers Raised On Video Games And War Movies

Generation Kill: The American Soldiers Raised On Video Games And War Movies

It’s the ultimate rush, because you know you’re
going into the fight to begin with and then you got a good song playing in the background
and that gets you real fired up. War itself is heavy metal, yeah. That is the first war that’s kind of been
driven by poetry, this urban poetry of rap and rock ‘n’ roll.Music Harley: Over two decades,
acclaimed Australian war artist George Gittoes has seen plenty of conflict – from Nicaragua
to Somalia. You kind of ask, why do I need to come here? During an 18 month stint on the frontline
in Iraq, he has put down his pencils and paintbrushes and picked up a video camera to portray America’s
first digital media generation at war. These are not like the soldiers who have come
back from any other war. When they first came, they expected it to be like Rambo or like
a video game or like Black Hawk Down, but when they actually got there, it didn’t take
long before they found it was completely earthy, gritty. Saddam, what ya doin’? We’re a comin’ for
you. The culture George Gittoes has captured on
videotape was also observed by others on the frontline.Rolling Stone magazine contributor
Evan Wright was embedded with the Marines 1st Reconnaissance Battalion on the road to
Baghdad. His first book about their ultra violent culture is called Generation Kill. They were raised by television, Hollywood
movies, video games,Internet porn. That stuff was available to them from a very young age.
And that’s sort of how they were acculturated into society. Both book and documentary offer unvarnished
insights into the complex meeting of youth culture and the American military machine.
It’s war fought by the first PlayStation generation. Here, music matters and ‘Soundtrack to War homes
in on its use in combat. This is the one we listen to the most. This
is the one when we travel, when we’re killing the enemy. Going through war, coming up here
into Iraq, coming into Baghdad – Drowning Pool Let the Bodies Hit the Floor is definitely
the song we listen to.That’s the motto for our tank – Let the Bodies Hit the Floor – because
it was just, it was fitting for the job we were doing. George Gittoes has spent the last few weeks
in New York. Some of his material is featured prominently in Michael Moore’s controversial
film Fahrenheit 9/11.And Soundtrack to War is about to have a month of screenings on
American music channels, including MTV. I have worked in America since I was 18 and
I haven’t seen the country as polarised as it is now since the time of Vietnam War. The
impact that I hope the film has is that America will actually appreciate and understand the
soldiers that it sent to Iraq, and there isn’t any understanding. In fact, most people here
seem to be oblivious to what they’re going through and I think that will help them. This is an M1 Abraham main battle tank. And
in our communications system, there is a place where it’s possible to hook up a CD player,
so if you want to check it out. From right here, I control the music and it works in
all four helmets. So when we’re cruising down the road, I’m listening to Tupac. George Gittoes says that it’s no accident
that for many soldiers, gangster rap has become the soundtrack to the first conflict of the
21st Century. A lot of these soldiers have come from street
battles. They’ve been involved, particularly the rappers, in a very tough lifestyle and
they’ve made the best soldiers because they’ve been doing it on the streets in America. Like,
like urban America is kind of a war zone. There is not a huge difference about writing
about south central Los Angeles and the gang wars down there and writing about, you know,
Saddam City and Baghdad. Evan Wright has closely covered inner city
American violence before the war in Iraq. His book portrays a fighting force drawn largely
from broken homes, raised in a cynical, digital age. The majority of these guys were raised by
either single parent homes or in homes where both parents worked, so, in effect, they didn’t
really have a lot of parenting. In Vietnam, the whole story is of a generation
of Americans that were innocent and they lost that innocence in the jungles of South-East
Asia. And in this case, these guys were raised on violent video games, movies and a presidential
sex scandal involving president Clinton. So these guys, I always tell people, were sort
of pre-jaded. These soldiers, argues Evan Wright, are unlike
those who came before them. One thing about them is they killed very well
in Iraq. We keep it real in the battlefield… Ultimately, both observers offer a portrait
of a complex street-smart and creative generation of fighters who find the reality of war far
removed from the screen battles of their childhood. Usually you see in the movie, bang, you’re
dead. You fall down. Here, bang, you should be dead. Your guts are hangin’ out but you’re
still walkin’ around, still talkin’.Sittin’ in a swing set, swingin’ like you’re half
crazy. Like, they don’t die!

progress according to a plan. accelerate monetary concentration to the top one percent. take away any opportunities besides military and feed anything they want as long as it can go through internet for free, anyone will be great soldiers.
anyone who doubt the effects of games and movies don’t know anything about the world. they don’t know that games and movies are simulators. they also don’t have any idea how effective they are. it doesn’t take much for our brains to adapt the simulators as real and that’s why they are so effective training aids in any fields.
sad truth is anyone who questioning the effects of games and videos are responsible for indirectly sending young americans to the battle fields. becomes a part of a war machine that only helps the richest in the country. tragic. yet this happens because people actually don’t see the effects of games and movies. some actually laughs at this. american armed forces are the biggest volunteer military force in the history of man kind. they all join the military with their own will. if anyone can deny that this isn’t the effect of americans brain effectively altered through these simulators to familiarize the battle zone to make people feel less inclined resist very very dangerous job, i want to know how they do it.
it’s real america. you can fly a airplane without any actual flight time with enough exposure to a good simulator. pulling a trigger or developing a desire to wanting to pull a trigger is a lot easier task than that. stop laughing and wake up.

The deadliest conflict in human history was World War II nearly 80,000,000 humans died, it ended in September 1945. Metal was created in 1969. The first video game was created in 1972 and rap started in the 1980s.. war is literally the most primal interaction that humans have and they are blaming it on 20th century inventions? What Evan is trying to explain is that this generation was completely desensitized to war and the horrors of the third world by the luxuries of the first world, how ironic

Actually there is a big difference between South Central Los Angeles and Baghdad. What stupid fucking statement, Los Angeles has areas that can be violent especially during the time that the Iraq War veterans were growing up but it doesn’t come close to the violence of Baghdad at all. American violence in general never came close to Saddam’s regime. Video games, porn, heavy metal and hip hop never prepared them for war. Being able to choose whether they want to fight or not unlike Vietnam was made them better fighters.

If I'm sad I listen to happy music and it changes my mood. If I'm feeling down I listen sad music that makes me cry. If I'm angry I listen to heavy music to fuel it. I can even listen to music that makes me horny.

Music is like drugs, it changes consciousness and mood.

I have a mate whos angry all the time. It took over a year for him to listen to me. But since hes cut out all the aggressive and egotistical rap music he used to listen to, hes doing better, self knowledge.

Just because its an opinion generally held by conservative busybodies doesn't mean its wrong.

Music effects mood. ITS WHY WE LISTEN TO IT!

Because brutal violence and warfare never existed until porn and video games. Never mind the millions killed in trenches in the First World War or the violence of Ghenghis Khan and his steppe soldiers or the multi millions who perished in World War Two or the hundreds of thousands dead from civil warfare. I don’t mean to minimize the losses and suffering of soldiers from this era of war, but a few thousand dead over 15 plus years doesn’t even remotely compare to previous wars. I mean there were multiple single days and single battles where many more US soldiers were killed in less than 12 hours than have been in this entire period of wars and conflicts the US has been involved in this century. Over 400,000 Americans died in world war 2 and there weren’t video games or “aggressive” music. All kinds of men and young boys lying about their age have been documented for decades and decades ago in previous wars who enlisted because they thought war would be fun and exciting and it would be an adventure based on stories they had read and heard from veterans of wars before them, only to find out war was not a fun and exciting adventure. Is that any different from what is being said here where they say these men are enlisting to go to war based on grandiose ideas of what war is from watching war movies and playing war games, only to find out war was hell and not anything like the movies had made it seem? I mean it is nothing new, except I think you have more cases of weaker young men joining up to fight that have zero business in the military, with it’s clear hierarchal command structure and mandatory requirements of fulfilling your duty on and of the battlefield, who just aren’t cut out for service and loyalty to brother and country, ultimately having catastrophic breakdowns when the urgency and fear in battle strikes. These same young men aren’t cut from the same cloth as their brothers in arms who volunteer to serve their country for reasons other than because movies and games made it seem cool and fun. And both types could both have played video games of the war variety and watched movies depicting war. But there’s a difference between them, and typically that is the fact that some play video games and it takes over huge aspects of their lives where they are addicted to playing and fantasizing, unable to put the controller down and live in the real world a bit, almost unable to function in real life normally. And socially, this is glaringly evident. Whereas the others play video games just for fun and don’t care much about their stats, not obsessing and letting it consume their actual real life while having sense of the real world.

I read 2 out of 3 soldiers come back with PTSD. This is a burden that’s stinks. I guess when you kill and think you’ll be normal afterwards isn’t always the case

It is not the movies, video games.. It is the broken families where their kids become tools for the evil doers.

People in the comment section are misunderstanding it

In WW2 people were compelled to fight to save themselves
However if you look at Iraq what exactly was the motive behind going there ? The politicians (the VP) WANTED OIL MONEY .these soldiers wanted to live the Rambo life played on violent video games thought war zone is going to be the same ! This is one of the few reasons why there was Human Rights violation on a large scale in the Iraq war & now that whole country is ruined thanks to the greed of oil
